The Sentinel offers nonprofit and other community organizations an opportunity to promote upcoming events for free in the community calendar for three days before the event. Events requiring reservations may be promoted for up to two weeks before the reservation deadline.

Events that require a purchase from a for-profit business, even if a donation is made to the organization, are not eligible for the calendar.

Submit items at least one week in advance via email, [email protected]; call (717) 248-6741; online, Virtual Newsroom at www.lewistownsentinel.com; or mail or drop off, The Sentinel, 352 Sixth St., P.O. Box 588 Lewistown, PA 17044. The editor reserves the right to edit all submissions.

• Mifflin County Chapter of the PA Association of School Retirees luncheon meeting — noon, Thursday, Sept. 7, Birch Hill Event Center, Burnham. Program will be Forest Fisher, the History of the Hoopes School. Menu includes mixed greens salad, vegetable lasagna, roll, cookie. Cost is $14. Reserve with number of persons attending by emailing [email protected] or calling (717) 437-6024 by noon, Friday, Sept. 1. All school retirees are welcome.

• Aviation ground school — 6:30-8:30 p.m., begins Sept. 13. Sign up for a 14-week course sponsored by the Experimental Aircraft Association. Must register to participate. For registration form, email [email protected] or call (717) 899-0138.

• Mifflin County Historical Society Fall Banquet — Thursday, Sept. 14, Penn Valley Retreat. Family style roast turkey dinner. Featured speaker Ken Longfield will present “The Appalachian Dulcimer.” Members $20, non-members $23. Reservations and payment due by Sept 7. Call (717) 242-1022.

• Goose Day dinner — pickup 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Sept. 29, Decatur Fire Co. Cookhouse, North 522, Alfarata.. Takeout only. Goose dinner, $17 or chicken dinner, $15. Goose bowl, $14 or chicken bowl, $12. • Fill-a-bag Book Sale — 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Juniata County Library, 498 Jefferson St., Mifflintown.

• Bingo — 1 p.m., Yeagertown Senior Center.

• Mifflin County Veterans Association meeting — 6 p.m., St. John’s Lutheran Church, 120 N. Main St. in Lewistown. Veterans are welcome. Light refreshments. Guest speaker will be Tyler Gum, director of the Pennsylvania Military Museum in Boalsburg.

Friday, Sept. 1

• Coffee with friends —

9 a.m.-noon at Lack-Tuscarora EMS, 9320 South Route 75, East Waterford.

• Community meal —

11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Pine Glen Church of the Brethren fellowship hall. Menu is hot dogs, macaroni salad, baked beans and dessert.

Saturday, Sept. 2

• 11th annual ROFF Doggie splash — 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Burnham Community Pool. All dogs must be up to date with rabies vaccination and license.

• Vietnam Veterans Memorial 10-Year Dedication — 1 p.m. at the Memorial, 5th Ave. in Burnham.

• Keystone State Muscle Cars Cruise-Ins — 5-8 p.m., Rec Park in Lewistown. All cars, trucks, bikes are welcome. No membership needed. For more information, call (717) 437-6050.
